Mental health update + What Are You Doing Wednesday

I got out of the house this morning and got to doctors! I even managed to break through a panic attack when they started shuffling me back and forth without sufficient information on what to do and who to talk to, without completely running away. And I'm being started on medication -- anti-anxieties and antidepressants. I've got an appointment on October 29th to check in and see how this prescription's working, so we'll see how the next month and a half goes -- I'm starting them tomorrow.

In other news: In the spirit of my last post, instead of a review blog, I'm going to try to start doing 'what are you reading Wednesday' -- although I think I'm going to throw anything I'm particularly keeping up with on other media as well -- and try to do mini-reviews for the things I mention. Here goes week one, under the cut to keep from being too long on your reading lists.

What did you recently finish?

I got Chimes at Midnight, the latest October Daye book from Seanan McGuire, about 6 on Friday and I finished a little after noon on Saturday. I am currently tired enough to not want to put coherent though together but in short: I love it, it's amazing, I don't want to wait a year for the next one, and I think it may be my new favorite Toby book? Except Artificial Night, but I have a weird relationship with AAN, where I love it to death but it come dangerously close to triggering me. If it's not my favorite, anyway, it's very close.
I flailed it out on Plurk as I read, so if you really want my spoiler-laden thoughts, you can poke here and then here, but seriously, so many spoilers.

I also just finished a reread of A College of Magics by Caroline Stevermer -- I love that book more than I remembered, on one hand, and I like bits and pieces of the writing more than I recalled. On the other, there are still pieces of it that just confuse the heck out of me, and the prose is also kind of purple from time to time. I don't think it's everyone's cup of tea, but it can be mine when I get in a high fantasy mood (not that I think it actually counts as high fantasy for the worldbuilding and style of magic? But the writing trends towards the books I like in that genre, it kind of reminds me of Dragonlance sometimes), and since I couldn't find the book I wanted, it worked quite well. And Greenlaw still sounds amazing.

In television, I finally finished all but the last episode of Hannibal -- I need to go back and rewatch the last one. I feel like I need to watch the series one more time to get it to stick, I marathoned it in really large quantities, but I still love it. And damn, I still love Abigail Hobbs more than words can say. And for very different reason, Beverly Katz.

What are you currently consuming?

All the Seanan, basically. I'm doing Ashes of Honor on audiobook and Rosemary and Rue on the Kindle.

On first-reads, I'm doing Monstrous Regiment on the Kindle right now, but I haven't been in quite the right mood for Pratchett -- partly the writing style, largely the fact that I have to keep switching back and forth to footnotes on my kindle and Crowley keeps doing annoying things when I do that. I've been reading it in tiny bits and pieces for a month or two now, and I forsee it being on the ongoing list for a while.

What do you think you'll start next?

Tomorrow is all Burn Notice, baby. Season seven marathon all day long and then series finale. Also on the subject of television, I am starting a Breaking Bad marathon when I get back to my parent's, and going to try and get current from where I am now (I've seen season one and that's all) by the finale.

Book-wise, I'm going to try and do a complete Toby reread, so that's going to dominate my Kindle for a while, and I think I'm going to start Feed on audiobook when I finish AoH -- which will be better in a lot of ways, because it's in more parts, so taking breaks is a lot easier. I don't have to remember where I was in the track if I decide to go listen to music. I also have Midnight Blue-Light Special sitting around, and the excitement over the next book cot ming out (ALEX! You have no idea how bouncy I am about getting Alex books) may finally make me get around to listening to it.

Screwing around on Flight Rising has put me in the mood to read Dragon's Milk really badly, but I have no idea where it is. I also want to reread the Sweep series, but I don't know where the first book of that is either. I'm gonna have to find something in actual book form, because my Kindle likes to turn on in my bag and die on me, so I try to have a backup plan. I'm just not sure what it is. If I can't find the dragon book I want, maybe I will start doing Dragonlance rereads.

Yeah, I need to reactivate my Netflix account at some point, so I can catch up. I have seasons 1 and 2 on DVD, at least, though I think they're in storage.
