Dear jukebox_fest Writer:

Hello [community profile] jukebox_fest writer!

General Likes and Dislikes:
Let's start with things I don't want, it will be shorter: I'm not really a fan of graphic sex or PWP smut; graphic descriptions of blood and gore; humiliation/embarrasment played for humor.

Now for the other side! Please don't feel restricted by this list, or by anything mentioned song-by-song. I would honestly love to see anything off any of these songs, so if your muse takes you somewhere I didn't mention, seriously, ANYTHING but the above three notes is awesome. But if you need some ideas:

Chosen families/close friendships are my favorite trope in anything ever, so something about that is always awesome. I love gen, but as far as romance goes, any kind of relationships -- up to, including and especially stable threesome/moresome/poly relationships -- are good with me too. Non-binary-gender characters fill my heart with glee. So does any kind of magic, be it a fantastical kind or a realistic Wiccan/Witch kind. Fantasy/sci-fi/post-apocalyptic themes make up the bulk of my reading, but I'm also plenty happy with things that don't fall under those categories.

If you're interested in writing a crossover, consider this your permission to merge any two songs on my list; I'd love to see what you come up with.

I'll be honest, I don't have much to say song by song; I'm pretty open for any of them. I've tried to give you a couple of ideas for each, but feel free to discard them and go any way you want.

Enough to Go By - Vienna Teng
I've built a lot of castles, I've built a lot of blazing speed-of-light machines
But it doesn't matter, you know; they all crumble in the winds of change
So I turned back to breathing, I learned a few good reasons to cry
And I finally called home, praying you weren't out of range
Carry the weight, I'll carry the weight of you, I swear
Carry the weight, I'll carry the weight of you

I seem to be making this up, but I remember hearing this called a post-apocalyptic love song at one point; if you want to go down that road, the image of the wanderer in this society finally finding their way back really fascinates me. If you don't, then feel free to set it in whatever kind of time or genre you want; I'm not dead-set on post-apocalypse. The stories of the traveller off on their own interests me just as much as the story of them coming back home, and whether or not they're planning to stay.

In Another Life - Vienna Teng
And in another life, I was married at thirteen
You were killed at twenty-one on a minor battlefield
I was buried beside my second stillborn child
My last thought it seemed a fevered dream

I tend to take this song very face-value and go YAY REINCARNATION, but if you've got a more metaphorical idea of it (or hell, maybe one of them is making it up), that's cool too. If you do go for reincarnation, other pasts or futures for these two would be interesting, if you don't want to focus on any of the ones in the song. So would expanding on the relationship -- the song never makes it clear; maybe they're a couple, or siblings, or friends, or something else in each incarnation?

Marrakesh Night Market - Lorenna McKennit
The stories are woven and fortunes are told
The truth is measured by the weight of your gold
The magic lies scattered on rugs on the ground
Faith is conjured in the night market's sound

I love the imagery in this song, and the way it conjures the market. I know it's based off a real-life market, but I can't help imagining it as a shady, magical thing -- something like the Floating Market in Neverwhere, or even the Bazaar in Fallen London. Whether you want to go strictly real-world, full-fledged fantasty, or something in between, I just think something about the kind of things you find for sale and the people you find in this market would be fascinating.

Mother of the Crows - Seanan McGuire
Help me find the proper path, be my mother of the crows
Through the corn and through the chaff, though the wind of winter blows.
Guide my feet and guide me true, keep me turning to the right.
If I can keep faith with you, we may make it through the night
Bring me to the harvest, to the cotton and the corn
Spread your wings and show me quick, before November's born

Tell me about the mother of the crows; tell me about the people seeking her; just give me something pretty and atmospheric and autumn-ish. No really, give me anything. That's all I got here; I just love the atmopshere here.

Seven Devils - Florence and the Machine
And now all your love will be exorcised
And we will find you saints to be canonized
And it's an even song, it's a melody
It's a battle cry, it's a symphony
Seven devils all around me, seven devils in my house
See they were there when I woke up this morning
I'll be dead before the day is done

I love this song, but I constantly feel like I'm missing a step on what it's about, which means I'm wide-open on it. Is it revenge? Rightousness? Desperation? Give me whatever you want. Tell me why the person in the song is dead-set on hurting the other person, or why they're going to be dead; tell me why the person they're so dead-set on hurting does/does not deserve it. Dark is fantastic -- although if you can get something light out of this, I will probably applaud you for managing to do so, so you know, go for it.

Woman King - Iron and Wine
hundred years, hundred more
someday we may see a
woman king, wristwatch time
slowing as she goes to sleep

The imagery of this song is lovely. I could see it fitting with mythological figures, so if you want to pair it with some kind of mythic/biblical imagery (I'm more familiar with myths in general, but I'm okay with either) -- or even fairy tale/folklore/archetype imagery -- have a blast; or just play with the song alone. Once again, I think this song is gorgeous, but I also feel like a miss a step in interpreting it, so -- give me whatever comes to mind for the woman king, or maybe for why she's not there and why she should be.

Hi there! I don't know you at all, but I was looking through the nominations awhile ago, decided I didn't have time to do the exchange, and then was hit by a lightning bolt of inspiration for "Woman King" anyway. So I wrote and posted a fic for it. : )

Now that the requests summary is posted, I thought I'd look up the people who'd nominated the song and give them the link. It's not tailored to your request or anything, but check it out if you want, although obviously no obligation to read or comment or anything. Er, looking at your "do not wants", there's a little bit of broken bone description (for the canonical broken bone in the lyrics).
